Why Maria?

Who am I?
I am the one who led Maersk's five-year research on identifying the optimal fuel mix for decarbonizing their fleet of 700+ ships, providing a clear pathway for their decarbonization efforts.
So – what did I learn from this journey? (Beside of the pros and cons of pretty much all potential fuel pathways out there – and how the shipping world works from the inside.)
I realized that to solve very complex problems, companies need to overcome their aversion of sharing with other companies. Keep your secrets - but dare to connect. Not only to your colleagues. You need a range of different stakeholders from universities, technology developers, investors, fuel producers (old and new), NGO's, knowledge centres to crazy people having wild ideas no one ever thought of.
Only openness will give you a fighting chance of approaching a solution. In my experience many companies seeking to decarbonize simply 'don't know what they don't know' making it difficult connecting to the right people and companies to get the right info.
This leads to the question: "What is your strategy for connecting?
Another important learning for me has been that the old saying 'no one solution fits all' also goes for the decarbonization of the shipping world. So – let's not seek 'the one and only solution' – but the range of different solutions that works for each company within its constraints and conditions.
Dare to connect. I'm looking forward to meeting you.
